Why Spiti is the New Ladakh

Ladakh. Everyone’s heard of it, and everyone is flocking to it. In the process, other places which are equally beautiful go unnoticed. Jai Govind Meena, Founder, Renok Adventures (who also runs a Jeep Safari through Spiti) believes “Spiti is the perfect road trip. It is untouched and pristine, and when compared to throngs of tourists in Ladakh, it forms the perfect alternative to it. The Buddhist culture is rich and diverse, and worth exploring. Here are 8 reasons why Spiti is the new Ladakh.
1. Spiti Is Unexplored:
The barren landscape of Spiti is yet untouched by the masses. The vast, desolate valleys offer solitude and an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Don’t miss the chance to explore this beautiful work of Mother Nature, before everyone gets to know about it!

2. Rich Buddhist Culture:
Lahaul&Spiti’s Buddhist culture is in fact, more diverse than that of Ladakh. With its many significant monasteries, such as Dhankar Gompa, Ki Gompa, and Tabo Monastery, the rich Buddhist culture of Spiti Valley offers a fascinating opportunity of discovery for travellers and historians alike.

3. Ladakh Is Crowded:
Ask around, everyone from you friends to your relatives is taking a trip to “Leh-Ladakh”. With the increasing population pressure on land, its resources are being used up faster than they can be replenished. Therefore, it would be wise to divert our attention and travels, and Spiti offers an alternative.
4. Similar Landscape:
Since Spiti Valley falls in the rainshadow of the Himalayas, it receives next to no rainfall, as the moisture laden clouds from the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Bay Of Bengal are blocked off by the mountain ranges in front of it. As a result, the landscape is quite similar to that of Ladakh, with steep, rocky, barren valleys.

5. Low Tourists:
The landscape of Lahaul&Spiti has not yet been flocked to by tourists, and the remote charm of Spiti Valley still exists. If you are looking for a less crowded travel destination, this is it.

6. Unique Attractions:
Spiti offers some interesting sights, such as the only mummy of a Buddhist monk (at Gue, around 550 years old), in the world. And of course, who can forget the majestic Chandra Tal, the most beautiful lake around, with the Chandrabhaga ranges standing tall behind it.

7. Perfect Road Trip:
The roads of Lahaul&Spiti are long, winding, and they offer some of the best views of the Himalayas. Whether you choose to do it over 7 days or over 20, it can be the perfect choice for that road trip you’ve always been planning with your friends!
Jai GovindMeena, the founder of RenokAdventures(which also runs a Jeep Safari through Spiti) has the following to say about it:
“Spiti is the perfect road trip. It is untouched and pristine, and when compared to throngs of tourists in Ladakh, it forms the perfect alternative to it. The Buddhist culture is rich and diverse, and worth exploring. Moreover, a big plus point is that before entering Spiti, the route goes through scenic Kinnaur, which with its famous Kinnauri apples and forests, is a sight to behold”.
8. The Challenge:
Being in the border areas, Ladakh is of strategic importance to the Indian Army and the government. Therefore, the roads are metalled and well maintained. By contrast, the roads of Spiti valley are less maintained, and traversing them offers a challenge to the adventurous folks out there. With river crossings and what not, what are you waiting for? Awaken the passion in you!
