Thoratti is among the new drama films on ZEE5 and is based on a 1980’s theme on the life of rural drama of the community of goat herders in the village of Ramanathapuram. The movie is in the regional Tamil language and it portrays tightly knitted emotions of love and loss. The director P. Marimuthu depicts an intense portrayal of revenge and betrayal and is now streaming on ZEE5.
The cinematography of the movie by Kumar Sridhar has been spot on, capturing the beauty of the villages across southern regions of Tamil Nadu such as Dindigul, Madurai, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram and Sivagangai. The film’s producer and lead actor, Shaman Mithru, stated that the film’s making and characteristics were along the lines of those seen in Paruthiveeran (2007), Subramaniyapuram (2008)
The story revolves around Mayan (Shaman Mithru) who is a kind-hearted shepherd and leads a happy life with his wife, Semponnu (Sathyakala). Sathyakala’s bold character completely steals the show where she sticks to her decision of marrying Mayan even when the entire village opposed it as Mayan was irresponsible and a drunkard. The actress was so confident that with her love she would be able to change him.
The plot of the movie is set up in such a way that one can totally relate to the time when the houses were small and the newly married couples had no privacy. The movie depicts that despite the fact that we live in a male dominant society, Mayan’s wife humiliates him in private in order to make him a better and responsible man. It’s considered a man’s duty to protect his wife but here the wife protects her husband and makes it a point that no one utters anything against him in public. Adding on to keep the viewers entertained the movie has good thoratti songs.
The story turns complicated when Mayan befriends 3 men from his village who have an altogether different motive in life, affecting Mayan’s personal life and landing him in trouble. It was his wife who chooses not to help him when he gets arrested for a crime he did not commit to make sure he understands that his friends have a bad influence on him and leaves their company.
The effortless and strong performances by the cast are the highlights of the movie and make every scene of the movie even more realistic and relatable as every one of us has faced betrayal in our lives at one point or the other and had often regretted the decisions they had made. The emotional plot of the movie is surely going to fill your eyes with tears where there comes a point in the life of nice people where they refuse to ask for justice and even hesitate to help. Watch how Mayan’s past friendship with few people affects his life post his marriage. Can Mayan come out of the mess?
